Technology & Design
Studying this subject gives students the opportunity to:
analyse and evaluate existing products
design and make quality products
learn about production methods and workshop practice
develop decision making skills
The GCSE is divided into 4 modules taken over two years
Technology and Design Core 20%
Students sit an external examination at the end of year 11 which covers manufacturing, electronics, pneumatic control and mechanical control.
Design Assignment 20%
Students must demonstrate their ability to design a set product under controlled conditions. This task is completed in the second term during class time.
Product Design 20%
Students study design innovation, components, fabrication and industrial manufacturing process. They sit an external examination at the end of year 12.
Design Project 40%
Students must demonstrate their ability to design and make a product under controlled conditions in their final year. This task is undertaken during class time.
You should consider Technology and Design if you are interested in designing new products, learning about manufacturing processes in workshops and making products from wood, metal or plastic.
